Find your ideal body weight using four clinical formulas
A 5'10" male has an average ideal weight of about 166 lbs across all four formulas, with a range from 154 lbs (Miller) to 170 lbs (Hamwi).
A 5'7" female has an average ideal weight of about 140 lbs, with individual formula results ranging from 135 lbs (Miller) to 145 lbs (Hamwi).
A 5'6" male has an average ideal weight of about 148 lbs, with formula estimates from 142 lbs (Miller) to 152 lbs (Hamwi).
Ideal body weight (IBW) is a clinical estimate of what a person should weigh based on their height and gender. It was originally developed for medication dosing but is commonly used as a general health guideline.
Each formula was developed by different researchers using different population samples and methods. The Devine formula (1974) is the most widely used in clinical settings. The average of all four provides a balanced estimate.
These formulas do not account for body composition, frame size, age, or ethnicity. A muscular person may weigh more than their 'ideal' weight while being perfectly healthy. Use these numbers as general guidelines, not strict targets.
